Dengue… The Emerging Epidemic

Posted by in General Interest

When we were in Singapore, I heard the disease called Dengue.  Numerous ads on TV’s, newspaper ads, and even sincere volunteers trying to help me understand the dangers had no effect. I left Singapore in 2008 with limited knowledge of this disease.

This week my daughter was diagnosed with Dengue, and everything came together.  I realized belatedly that I knew precious little of this often heard disease- and assumed that I would never cross its path.   With my younger daughter getting admitted in the hospital, I realized why I did not know too much of the disease.

All the ads and pamphlets were too complex for me to read, and remember.

Everyone close to me and friends of our family who came to visit or enquired about my daughter, was as ignorant about the disease as I was.  (No solace in the fact that they also did not know).

Reading in the web brought me articles that were lengthy, and not very easy to read.

Trying to explain this to my daughter, I thought the best way to do this was through an Infographic.

Well, the Infographics I found on the net were too detailed or specific to certain countries.

So, here is my first cut view of the Dengue Infographic.

I am using this to explain this to my daughter/ friends- and I realize this could be useful to a lot more people.

Take this seriously, friends.

This is a bad disease for anyone to get, last of all your children.

This is a very serious problem, I have realized, and this too because it hit somewhere close to home. I hope more and more people will be learning more about this and taking preventive measures.

Any other feedback would be a great.

Be a Giver… the rest will follow

Adam Grant, a Professor at Wharton, has written a book “Give & Take – A Revolutionary Approach to Success”, which gives some great insights into the behaviour of people.

It classifies people into 3 categories in the world –

  1. – Givers
  2. – Takers
  3. – Matchers

His studies has shown that a majority of the people are “Matchers” who try to balance giving & taking.  A few are Givers and a few are only Takers.  I am sure you can relate to people in your family, office and in your community, who will fit into these 3 categories.

You can read more about it here

My personal thoughts differ a bit on this.

I have seen, time and again, that the satisfaction one gets by “giving” rarely comes in the “taking”.  In today’s world, it is imperative that one learns to “Give” more than they “Take”.   In almost every instance, in my personal life, I have seen that things always work out & people who I have had the opportunity to help/ support, always support me when required.

Rather than trying to “Balance” what you give vs. what you take, make it a WIN-WIN equation always- and do things that will help the other person- and there is always a payback to you in some manner.

And unlike Dr. Grant’s perspective, I don’t think I have done too badly from a career perspective.

In your professional life, remember-

  • Givers and takers

The Free Agent Nation…

Posted by in Attitude, Personal Branding, Personal Effectiveness

In his book “The Brand You 50”, Tom Peters, speaks brilliantly about the need to create yourself as a “brand”.   Written in 1999, the book was, in many ways, way ahead of his time (but then, Tom Peters has always been ahead of his time).

It gives some great ideas of transforming yourself from an “Employee” into a brand that shouts distinction, commitment and Passion!

One idea that has stuck with me – and has at last helped me move on in that direction was articulated powerfully in his last chapter… and I quote verbatim –

50. Welcome  to the Free Agent Nation.

  • – New Economy
  • – Unit-Of-One
  • – Independence
  • – Freedom
  • – Self- Reliance
  • – Icon- woman
  • – C-o-o-l Dude/ Dudette
  • – Cool Shit
  • – WOW! Projects (or Bust.)
  • – Imagination Inc.
  • – Restless Renegade.

MY WORK MATTERS.

I am not sure if it made sense then… but it makes tremendous sense now.

The times have changed- and the more you look around, the more you realize it. No job is secure.   Everything you assumed and took for granted in your career and in your company  may not be true anymore. If it has not hit you yet- it will.

It is not the years of service that matters!

It is the quality of service and the value you bring that matters.

What are your WOW! Projects.

It is time to start thinking of being a unit of ONE- with skills that help your customers (the company you work for, or do a project for).

This is a MUST READ book for any of you who has reached the stage where you think you can take the plunge!

It is exciting! This is the time… Maybe not in 1999 – but definitely in 2013!

Start preparing to take your first steps in this direction and start thinking differently.

If you have not read it, I strongly recommend you to read this book.  It will worth your time.  Pick it up in Kobo or Amazon.
