iPad Vs. Netbooks – Emerging trends

Apple

Recently I had written an article on iPads Vs. Netbooks.

During a trip to Singapore since then, I had the opportunity to actually see an iPad.

I stand corrected in my note- because I think it is unfair to compare it with the Netbooks.

The packaging & the product positioning does not actually do it justice to compare it with Netbooks.  I think it a very unique positioning that Apple is pushing for the iPad.

That said, a huge number of iPads have been sold in the first 3 weeks since launch. I believe, the product still has some time to go before it gets ready for the broader market. Like I said in my earlier post, it will version 2 or 3, which will shake the market – if there was not competition.  Unlike the iPod, this time round, the HP Slate and other similar products are bound the hit the market before that- which will give a much better user interface & features, which the iPad lacks in its current avatar.

A recent article in Businessweek by Rich Jaroslovsky – Diary of an iPad Man is a great article that highlights some of the shortcomings (and positives) of iPad

  • Sunlight – usage outdoors is a challenge
  • Using a Word processor was difficult
  • Data entry into a spreadsheet was very cumbersome

What worked well were –

  • Kindle books were apparently good
  • Battery life is good

All said and done, I think, this is a product that has created a new market segment- just like the Netbook did 3 years ago! The iPad will spawn a number of products that will address a new way of using these Computing devices, and that is the value that Apple has created.

That said, will it be the leader? Possibly not- because with the HP Slate & the other products from Acer, Lenovo, Dell etc round the corner, it will not be that easy to corner the market share.   But Apple will make changes, and bring out features that will make the product unique in the coming quarters.

Indeed a good time for us consumers.

For now, I will stay with the Intel, Windows platform and await the launch of the HP Slate!

Apple iPad vs. Netbooks- Round 1

Posted by in Netbook, Technology

Yet another debate out in the market!

Click below for the launch speech from Steve Jobs.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/video/2010/jan/27/apple-ipad-launch

Of course, typical of his launches, this one too, was intense & driven brilliantly. Add to it the aura that Apple builds for these type of Launches, people were already expecting to see something out of the world, and they get what they are asking for. (check out the look in the faces of the audience).

However, in this case, did they get the product that they were hoping for?

Content, in my opinion is key. Having a sexy product, but without the right content/ features, does not make the product automatically successful. It could get people fired up, and get them to go and buy it- but the proof of the success comes from the sustained growth it can generate.

Unlike the iPods & the iPhones, which touched a chord, and offered something, that was VERY different from what the market was seeing, the iPad is offering something similar to what people already get today. Agreed, the marketing may not be as snazzy as the Apple Launch (but then, whose is?)- But the features a customer gets are far superior to what the current version of the iPad offers.

Changing the game, the paradigm, is difficult, and Apple, to their credit, has proven its critics wrong many times over. So, one respects the company for doing things totally OUT of the box, and making a success of it. However, some products need more than just a “look” differentiation.

iPad, in my opinion, is not it.

Why?

Because the stuff it lets people do, people already have devices that they can already do with- in many cases cheaper- and without having to worry about buying extra gear separately.

If reading eBooks is the criteria, I think a Kindle does it very well – and provides much better value for money for that. If browning the net etc, then the Netbook (however Jobs maligns it) still offers the bang for the buck and value that the customer can appreciate.

Maybe it is ver. 2.0 or later of the iPad that will take into account the customer requirements- would be the game-changer that Steve Jobs is looking for. Till then, my expectation – this will sell well, it will taper off- and Apple will launch the second version of this product- which will do slightly better.

Here is a quick take on the comparison between a Apple iPad and a Netbook.

Configuration

Apple iPad

Netbook

Toss up

Disk

16GB SSD

2.5” HDD – Upto 320GB

Most users have pictures, video and other stuff, that unfortunately occupies ‘space’. A bigger disk space definitely works.

Processor

Apple 1GHz A4 (not tried)

Intel Atom 1.6GHz

Intel Atom is tested and has proven itself. Apple will have to do this. No position as yet- though will side with the Intel Atom.

OS

iPhone OS 3.2

Either XP Home or Win 7

No question – Win 7 or a xP home vs. a Phone platform! Not withstanding, the pedigree, I prefer the staid platform that I can use for multitasking and the works.

Screen

9.7” display

10.1”+

Options available with the netbooks.

Ports

No USB. Dock connector

USB!

No buying options that cause more spend of money!

Navigation

Multitouch

Trackpad

Touch works! Apple wins here.

To me, the way things look; Netbooks is still the way to go.

But Apple being what they are – expect a major improvement in the works that will throw the current concepts out of the door. Intel & the other Hardware vendors have a short window- and should maximize the time to create as much as gap as possible.

And while at it – also start differentiating- not all Netbooks need be equal! Take a page out of Sony’s strategy – and create positioning that is unique – and not based only on price!

Smartphones & PC’s Converge!

Posted by in Technology

While the PC prices have been going south over the last few years, smartphones have become smarter at the same time and more compelling to a mobile user. It appears that many hardware vendors are going to be racing to build the other engine of growth going forward- Smartphones that extend the power of the computers to the mobile world! Phones running Win Mobile (HP, Acer etc), Blackberry, Apple (of course, the uber cool product of all) all vying for the customer’s ears & purses.  This was an interesting article in The Economic Times recently, that suggested that many vendors will be using the Mobile strategy that most of them cannot afford to ignore.

Not too far away from a scenario when you see ads like this – Buy a Smartphone & get a Computer free!

Practical Analysis: Time To Embrace The Netbook

Posted by in Netbook

When Asus launched the first “Netbook” in the market in 2007- it created a sense of excitement with the customers who were suddenly seeing a notebook at a very low price. The same sense of excitement did not percolate down to the other vendors who took a wait & watch attitude.

Today- The Netbook’s time has arrived- and whether the hardware vendors like it or not- this is a product that is here to stay.  Kudos to Intel for creating a brand category, that has fast evolved to become a mainstay in the consumer segment.  That said, it has also reached a stage where many Mid size & bigger organizations are beginning to look at this as an option for the IT purchase for their employees.

Think about it –  in these recessionary times (well, technically, we are ‘supposed’ to be moving out of recession), many companies are looking at ways of keeping the cost structures down- but at the same time becoming smarter about not letting go of their technical edge… and trying to balance both is going to be a bit of a challenge!  A computer, that is both cost effective as well as comes with the basic features (the latest netbooks infact are almost full featured) that will make a mobile employee more effective, is a welcome option.  Instead of buying a full featured notebook, the Netbook is definitely an option worth considering.

This article has some interesting thoughts- but I am looking this as a mainstay & looking forward to a state where these Netbooks also drive the features up- while forcing the cost of Notebooks to fall in the very near future.

As a consumer, these are indeed good times to shop for a PC 🙂

Netbooks – Primer and Pricing Trends

Posted by in Netbook, Ultra Low Cost PC's

Netbooks – 18 months ago, one did not even know about this word – let alone having this as a family of laptops!  Today, this is the fastest growing market segment within the PC Industry.  Players who shunned this market, are making a beeline for this segment and get a slice of the pie – before it is too late!

Super quick primer-

Netbooks are for –

  1. users who are looking for their Nth PC  – chances are he is scouting around for a “low cost” entry Level Laptop!
  2. a user for who is looking at a PC with basic features- and a “mobile” home notebook.
  3. a user who does not want to spend another $1000 for a laptop- which gets outdated the next day!

Netbooks do not come with any fancy gadgets or tools… they are more positioned as a really “personalized” notebooks at a super affordable costs.

– Atom processors from Intel are the defacto drivers of this product.

– More than 90% of the Netbooks sold run on Windows XP – and no- I am NOT making this up.  Data (shown below for you non-believers) show that the cost of a Netbook with XP is actually cheaper than that of a Netbook with some version of Linux.  And one is not talking of the ubiquitous “Cost of Ownership” that has been killed by most companies!

Netbooks are the future of computing- and in my personal opinion (Intel and Microsoft have made this possible).  Intel with their Atom Processor that created a new market altogether (this has to rate as one of the biggest marketing case studies). Microsoft with their adaptation of the OS – which is now the default in most Netbooks.

Here is some information that I found that is pretty interesting!

Compare the price with the Linux devices (though the pricing is not an apple to apple- the HDD option with XP actually gives a much better customer satisfaction with storage space than that of the SSD users. (Solid State Device).
